How I became a vet

Growing up in the south of France, it was watching our family vet care for our pets that sparked my interest in becoming a vet. I moved to Germany for Vet School (TiHo Hannover).

It is in Berlin that I settled for the first 5 years of my vet career (Free University of Berlin) for my internship and later as a clinician. In the meantime, I worked towards my doctorate degree with Andrea Tipold’s neurology group.

My time in Berlin instilled in me the importance of team work and camaraderie. In times of heavy workload, being supported by a great team makes all the difference!

My early years as a veterinary neurologist.

I started my residency in Glasgow in 2015. In the beginning I struggled to understand the Glaswegian accent, but now it is one of my favourite accents in the world.

My residency was an eye-opening experience, as I was surrounded by a supportive team that encouraged collaboration, discussion, and banter. My supervisors were very interested in my growth and development, providing guidance and mentorship throughout my residency. The dedicated neurology nurses were instrumental in delivering exceptional patient care and ensuring that clinicians remained on the right track.

I passed my board examination in 2018 and moved to Bristol to start working as a senior clinician at Langford Vets. I finally had the opportunity to put into practice what I had learned about being a senior clinician.

Why I love doing what I do best.

I enjoy all aspects of veterinary neurology because I love untangling complex issues through rational analysis (like all neurologists).

I thrive in fast-paced environments where multiple tasks require simultaneous attention.

I also value a collaborating work environment: the dynamics of teamwork fascinate me and I enjoy fostering a cohesive and effective team environment. I have been actively involved in promoting fairness and collaboration as a member of the ECVN liaison committee for the last three years.

Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, drinking coffee and reading novels. Ideally all three at the same time.

How I became a vet

As many vets would say, I dreamt about becoming one as far as I can remember. The dream came true after I graduated from the Ecole Nationale Veterinaire de Toulouse.

Following graduation, I found a special interest in neurological disease and their treatment. A discipline so logical and so complex was appealing to me so I buried myself in books and quickly realised that specialist training would be my best option to move forward.

I had to become a veterinary neurology specialist. I knew it involved a longer journey, away from home; but this did not scare me.

My early years as a veterinary neurologist.

My journey took me across continents with training in Australia (University of Melbourne), Ireland (UCD), USA (Virginia Tech) and finally England.

This was an epic journey on its own, but the true reward came when I successfully passed the exam of the ECVN and became a specialist in veterinary neurology.

Over the years, I have come to realise that being a specialist is just the beginning of another journey.

In addition to my clinical work, I have also had the pleasure of lecturing, training, and teaching at various institutions, where I've had the chance to share my knowledge with dozens of residents and hundreds of students and nurses. These experiences have taught me so much about effective communication, teamwork, and leadership.

Why I love doing what I do best.

I am still first and foremost a clinician with a dedication to state-of-the-art patient care. I have a keen interest in the management of brain and spinal tumours, lumbosacral disease and diseases of geriatric dogs and cats.

Outside of work, I enjoy hiking, travelling and nice food.
